Tathan Online is the website for the magazine of MOD St Athan. Based in the Vale of Glamorgan, South Wales, MOD St Athan is the home of the RAF’s No 4 School of Technical Training which has operated from the site since 1938. It is also home to the University of Wales Air Squadron, No 634 Volunteer Gliding School, No 2300 Sqn Air Training Corps as well as 71(IR) Sqn and a range of support flights in, administration, medical and force development. It is a young minded, vibrant place to work focusing on, training, well being and future of our next generation of airmen and women.

GOING FOR GOLD

During the latter part of 2011 Cadet Flight Sergeant Megan Hamblin of 372 (Barry) Squadron travelled to Altcar Army Camp on Merseyside to attend a week long course of training to become a Duke of Edinburgh (DofE) leader. She also took the opportunity to complete the residential section of her own Gold Duke of Edinburgh award. GLIDER EXPERIENCE FOR AMERICAN FAST JET TEST PILOT

No 634 Volunteer Gliding School (634 VGS) gave the guest of honour at their annual dinner a chance to slow down his normal pace of life when he was treated to a flight in one of the squadron’s Vigilant motor-gliders when he visited them at the squadron headquarters at St Athan. Lt Cdr Clark Childers is an American Navy test pilot instructor currently based at The Empire Test Pilots’ School (ETPS) MOD Boscombe Down in Wiltshire where he is on an exchange programme.
