Welsh and Open Indoor Archery Championships: 29th January 2017
By kind permission of the Commanding Officer MoD St Athan, Wing Commander Pescott, and for the fourth successive year, the Welsh Field Archery Association (WFAA) hosted the Welsh and Open Indoor Championships at MOD St Athan. The event was organised and hosted by the local Archery Club, Llantwit Major Archers (LMA) who have very close-ties to the Unit and train in the Station Gym every Monday evening throughout the year.
As one of the largest indoor sporting venues in South Wales, the Station Gym is an ideal location for the Championships. Not only is it a huge facility, but it is also a very safe and controlled environment, essential for this potentially dangerous sport. With a full array of refreshments available, provided by LMA, participants and spectators alike were able to enjoy the entire day-long event. The initial disciplines began their “sighters” shoot at 9:30 am, and apart from a 30 minute pause for lunch, there was continuous shooting all day, culminating in all participants remaining for the Trophy presentations at 4:00 pm.
As with previous years, there were a great number of archers competing and as always, of a very high-standard. Over 80 Archers from Cubs, Juniors, Adults and Veterans took part in one or more of the various disciplines. The event is ever- growing from year to year with Archers coming from all over the UK to compete. From the far reaches of Scotland, North England and obviously local Archers from Wales, this truly is a national event on the Archery calendar. 26 Archers from Llantwit Major Archers competed on the day and it was fantastic to see that 14 of them came back with medals.
The LMA Club use events such as the Championships and their weekly training sessions, to promote the sport to personnel on the Unit and local area. The Club are always welcoming of newcomers and are extremely helpful and accommodating to those looking for a new hobby/sport.
